Welcome!
Thank you in advance for your time, attention and participation in the creation of the Development Diamond Standards.
The creation of Development Diamond Standards is an initiative of the Madison Dialogue, and this work is being carried out by the Diamond Development Initiative International (DDII), in collaboration with the Madison Dialogue Diamond Working Group (MDDWG).
PURPOSE:
The objective of this survey is to gather a broad range of preliminary ideas for establishing the Development Diamond Standards (DDS). The DDS will set minimum performance standards in regards to social; economic; environmental; labor; trading and/or governance issues for artisanal diamond operations in developing countries. Large companies at different stages of the diamond pipeline; cooperatives; and individual artisanal miners, as well as governments trading; buying; and exporting diamonds in developing countries will be expected to meet these standards in order to be confirmed as producing "development diamonds".
Crucially, these standards would be inclusive of the key individual and small scale artisanal diggers who mainly operate outside the formal economy and are thus excluded from similar initiatives.
As we have explained more fully in our email to survey participants, your responses would be used to categorize and draft the essential elements of a code of practice for artisanal diamond mining operations. Later, an open and inclusive consultative process will be conducted based on the key components as identified in your survey responses, and outlined in the draft document.
**Please, use Question# 19 to enter your contact information. The survey responses are designed to be anonymous, so without this contact information, we have no way of determining the respondent; in order to consult with you on certain specific points that you may have raised in your answers or comments.
WHO WE ARE:
The Diamond Development Initiative International (DDII) is a unique effort to promote beneficial development impacts from diamond mining, for over 1.5 million artisanal diamond diggers and their families who mostly live in Africa, but also Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. DDII brings NGOs, governments and the private sector together in a common effort that aims to help formalize and improve the socio-economic conditions of artisanal diggers; empower them as participants in their own development and also enhance consumer confidence that their product was ethically mined. We are currently working on the Development Diamond Standards project, to actualize the Development Diamond Principles by transforming them into meaningful and workable Standards with a third party verification system.
Thank You!
